Well, it has been 30 days since I started "Operation Junk Free" and things went pretty well. I managed to get rid of at least 10 things a day. Some days it was more, some days it took creative counting to make it ten (you know like when you count an old deck of cards as 18 things instead of one). We also had our garage sale. I succeeded in getting rid of all the stuff that I had set aside and I only kept 9 things from the garage sale, a dress and a skirt for my girls, 6 books for my girls and one basket of greenery, all of which already have homes:) I consider this a major accomplishment. I know that I didn't post everyday like I said that I would, but I am terrible when it comes to writing anything other than lists...I know a list is what I was supposed to be posting, but I always felt obligated to write more....basically I learned that I am a procrastinating perfectionist who never got around to it because I was afraid that I wouldn't do it perfectly. So what else did I learn?
I learned that I am more attached to my junk than I thought.
I learned that whenever junk is gathered into a central location, a garage sale will almost always develop.
That the $20 that I earned at said garage sale, was not worth the time and effort that was put into it.
That the fun and fellowship that was had at said garage sale was definitely worth the time and effort put into it. (I say next time, let's forgo the sale and have a "Farewell to the Junk" party. We'll give the junk away and sell snacks and drinks :)
That empty spaces do not retain their borders, they are quickly absorbed by surrounding objects. I can't find any of the empty spaces that were left by departing junk ;)
And last but not least, I have more that 30 days worth of junk.
So, what now? I think I am ready to move onto the "get rid of it whenever you find it" phase of the mission. This past exercise in purging junk has really given me freedom from my junk. I find that it is much easier to let things go and also easier to determine what needs to go and what can stay. So I think that for at least the next few weeks, I am just going to get rid of things as I find them, and not necessarily go looking for them. We'll see where I stand in a month or so. If I find that my spaces are getting crowded again, I will reinstate the mission....but for now let's call this one "Mission complete"
Til next time....
